If you are travelling to Vietnam, then it is important you consider all your visa options first.
Some nationalities such as the UK, Germany, France, Japan etc currently qualify for a free two week visa-on-arrival. This is great if you are travelling on a short holiday however, in my experience 2 weeks is not enough time to see much of Vietnam. You cannot re-new a free two week visa-on-arrival so obtaining a new visa would mean leaving the country and choosing one of the visa options below. I would recommend a one month tourist visa as a minimum to travel through the country, but to do it properly, you really need a three month tourist visa.
All these visas are visa-on-arrival, which require you to have a visa Invitation Letter on arrival at airport immigration. This visa Invitation letter takes 4 to 5 business days to obtain from the Government Immigration Department in Vietnam. There are many online services and agencies which you can use, including Vietlesson. On arrival to travelling to Vietnam, the second part of your visa-on-arrival is a stamp at the airport which incurs an additional fee. Below are the different visa options, invitation letter prices and Stamp fees.

Most foreign workers in Vietnam either have a company work permit or a one year multiple entry business visa which can be obtained by most Nationalities. The business visa allows you to work legally anywhere in Vietnam, and you do not have to leave the country within that year. Although the cost is a little higher for this visa, around $400 usd, depending on your country of origin, this is the visa of choice for most foreign workers.
If you are planning to gain a work permit with a language school or institution, it is important to note that you will require a degree and TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) or such equivalent. The work permit will be issued to you under that company name, and will not allow you to work for anyone else. Therefore, a one year multiple entry business visa can give you the flexibility to teach at more than one organisation, at the same time or move from job to job on the same visa.
It is important to note that if you enter Vietnam on a tourist visa, you are not legal to work. You can obtain your business visa once here, however you will be required to leave, and re-enter the country by airplane. The quickest and easiest route is to Bangkok, Thailand which you can do in the same day if necessary.
